Beaufort County School District | Beaufort, South Carolina                                                               The Beaufort County School District Board of Education's goal for arts education states, "Students will explore their own creativity, appreciate artists and art forms and transfer their value to academic, social and cultural experiences." Through valuable learning experiences, our students and staff actualize the Board of Education's vision, "A challenging, engaging, and safe school district connecting each child to a successful future, everywhere and every day!"

All 30 of our schools have full time arts educators, with the average representation of music and art in the elementary, expanded to chorus and band in the middle, and drama and dance in the high schools. A few of our elementary & middle schools offer dance and drama as a part of their arts core offerings. Not only should art be taught for arts sake by arts educators, we believe the Artist in Education Program is a valuable tool for brining professional teaching artists not only to our student population but as a form of staff development for our teachers, guidance counselors and administrators.

Our visual art teacher works with the regular classroom teachers to incorporate social studies, language, math, and science concepts with the art curriculum.  He organizes quarterly art exhibits in our art gallery, the CIS Hall of Frame.  He also encourages students to participate in art contests, enrichment activities, and school projects.  The music program also has a symbiotic relationship with the other disciplines, and it has been greatly enhanced by the addition of a piano keyboard lab.  All students are learning to play the keyboards.  The music teacher sponsors the school chorus and organizes an “open mic” session on Fridays during the students’ lunch.  Students are able to demonstrate their talents by singing, dancing, playing an instrument, or reciting a dramatic monologue.

New for this year, CIS added a dance studio.  Through ABC monies, a special projects’ grant, and donations from our business partners, we were able to remodel two adjacent classrooms into a dance room and pay the dance instructor’s salary.  All our students are receiving limited dance instruction.  These monies were also utilized to bring an artist-in-residency program to each grade level.  We continue to work diligently to provide exposure, instruction, and appreciation for the arts because we believe the arts are important and vital to the success of our students.

It is also reflected in our advocacy campaign and the Youth Arts Gala, which highlights visual and performing artists in our schools and is showcased in The Traveling Art Show, an exhibit of selected visual art works from students from all sites. One of our biggest successes is School Arts, which provides arts discipline content as well as exposure to professional artists through artist residencies.  Equally important are the expansion of our program for artistically gifted 3rd-6th graders, Arts Arising and the addition of our Gifted and Talented Artistic Program, Arts Scholars, for students in grades 7-10, as well as Positive Repercussions, African Drumming residencies, for at-risk middle school students.
